, an overqualified high school chemistry teacher living a "beige" life in Albuquerque. After being diagnosed with inoperable Stage 3 lung cancer on his 50th birthday, Walt makes a desperate, radical choice. To secure his family's financial future, he teams up with a former student and low-level dealer, Jesse Pinkman

Walt deals with the moral weight of having to murder Krazy-8. The title refers to both the brain and Walt’s abandoned company. After rejecting the Schwartzes’ money, Walt lies to Skyler that they are paying. To raise real cash, he and Jesse adopt a new business model: selling in bulk to a dangerous distributor, Tuco Salamanca. Their first deal goes wrong when Tuco brutally beats Jesse. A terrified Walt returns to the RV, prepares a batch of explosive “meth” (mercury fulminate), and walks back in — dramatically throwing a crystal at the floor, blowing out the windows, and demanding, “This is not meth. This is not meth.” He walks out with the money, now fully embracing the persona of “Heisenberg.”

In the season finale, Walt and Jesse need to scale up their production to meet Tuco’s massive demand for their blue meth. To do this, Walt raids his high school chemistry lab, stealing the necessary pseudoephedrine and specialized equipment to mass-produce methamphetamine. Jesse tries to set up a larger distribution deal but finds himself out of his depth. The season closes with Walt adopting the permanent "Heisenberg" alias, cementing his partnership with Jesse, and officially entering the dangerous world of large-scale drug manufacturing.

Walt and Skyler attend a birthday party for Elliott Schwartz, Walt's former college friend and co-founder of Gray Matter Technologies. Years earlier, Walt sold his shares in the company for a mere $5,000. Gray Matter is now a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, and Elliott is married to Gretchen, Walt’s former romantic partner. Elliott offers Walt a lucrative job and full health insurance coverage, but Walt’s immense pride makes him refuse. He views the offer as pity and charity.

In "Gray Matter," Walter's past comes back to haunt him as he encounters his former colleagues, Elliot Schwartz (Ken Forster) and Gretchen Schwartz (Katie Moffatt). The episode provides insight into Walter's history and his motivations for turning to the meth trade.
